TOP 5 FAVOURITE MOVIES (2018)

image

So these are my 5 favourite movies from 2018. Before I get there, I’d like to say I only watched 48 new movies (a small number when you consider how many are released every year). I’ve yet to see ‘A Star Is Born’ but I don’t think that would change my top 5. Also, Ethan Hawke was robbed of an Oscar nomination for his brilliant acting in ‘First Reformed’ as was Viola Davis (for ‘Widows’, my favourite performance of the year). I would also like to say that ‘Venom’ is not as bad as people say and that ‘Infinity War’ was kinda boring. Oh and Emily Blunt remains the most underrated and underused actress in Hollywood (though I think that’s about to change).

Faves:

  1. Roma -I’m still in that movie theater, completely blown away by @alfonsocuaron’s best movie to date;

  2. Cold War;

  3. Blackkklansman (horror-movie of the year?);

  4. Tully (So overlooked. @jasonreitman’s best IMO);

  5. Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get That Far On Foot.

Honourable mentions;

  1. First Reformed;

  2. Shoplifters;

  3. You Were Never Really There;

  4. Widows;

  5. Vice;

  6. A Quiet Place;

  7. Leave No Trace;

  8. 8th Grade;

  9. Mandy;

  10. Mid 90’s;

  11. Won’t You Be My Neighbor;

  12. Colette;

  13. Suspiria;

  14. American Animals;

  15. The Favourite;

  16. Three Identical Strangers;

  17. Sorry To Bother You;

  18. The Wife;

  19. Can You Ever Forgive Me?;

  20. The House That Jack Built;

  21. At Eternity’s Gate;

  22. Juliet, Naked;

  23. Black Panther;

  24. Private Life;

  25. Blindspotting.

My top favourite movies of 2017

So again, I wasn’t able to see all the movies I wanted to - still dying to see Alexander Payne’s ‘Downsizing’, Todd Haynes’ 'Wonderstruck’ , Joe Wright’s 'Darkest Hour’ and Annette Benning in 'Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool’- but out of all the ones I managed to see, these are the ones I liked the most.

My top 5:

1. Dunkirk (easily the best movie of the year. Best editing, sound-design, original score, cinematography, directing…I liked it so much I watched it 2.5 times in 24hrs hehe);

2. Personal Shopper (quite a surprise and it was my fave until I saw 'Dunkirk’. I’ve seen it 3 times so far. Thanks Criterion!);

3.  The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Noah Baumbach’s best since 'The Squid And The Whale’ in my opinion;

4. Call Me By Your Name (Michael Stuhlbarg is probably the most underused American actor in mainstream movies. Amazing how he can transform 100% into the characters he plays -to the point he is almost unrecognizable. Everyone is so in love with Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet - and rightfully so as they were superb in their roles- but I’d also like to see Stuhlbarg get some of the attention since this movie benefits greatly from his performance);

5. The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (Not as funny as 'The Lobster’-it’s a very different movie, duh- but funny nonetheless. If cinematography can be quoted -lol- this movie quotes a lot of Kubrick’s. Also, Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan give the year’s best performances in my very humble opinion);

Also loved:

- Phantom Thread (no. Daniel D Lewis is not going to retire after this one!!)

- Ladybird (well, it was only a matter of time before the always-great Greta Gerwig was kicking ass behind the camera as well. Here’s hoping she makes one movie every year);

- mother! (a friend of mine hated this one so much she had an argument with the theater manager and demanded a refund. LOL. I loved it and thought about nothing else for weeks.);

- Logan (in a class of its own, this is the best super-hero movie so far and probably the new standard in the genre. Why Hugh Jackman wasn’t nominated for any award is beyond me);

- The Florida Project (totes adorbs);

- The Shape Of Water (Sally Hawkins should win all the awards for her performance and I was specially happy to see The Creature From The Black Lagoon getting laid in a movie hehe);

- Good Time (was this the most overlooked movie of the year? I think it was!  'Adventures In Babysitting’ for grown-ups would be a perfect description that maybe would’ve taken more people to see it, yo!);

- Baby Driver (Edgar Wright’s biggest and best and possibly his best soundtrack too)

- The Beguiled (loved it despite Nicole Kidman being it. Thanks for another one, Sofia);

- Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets (underrated a.f! I could watch this again anytime);

- Spiderman Homecoming (what a relief this one was as good as Raimi’s Spiderman 2);

- The Disaster Artist (dude. the laughs were intentional this time);

- Woodshock (not sure the Mulleavy sisters meant to reference 'Picnic In Hanging Rock’ but I thought about it a lot while watching this. Was also pleasantly surprised by their fine taste in music. The soundtrack features great tracks by Wire, Suicide and Gary Numan);

- Ingrid Goes West (the first half of the movie was insanely funny and I still think about it);

- Atomic Blonde (yeah, no story during the first 30 minutes but still, one of the year’s most entertaining, dopest-looking and it had the best music you can ask for -Depeche Mode’s 'Behind The Wheel’, The Clash’s 'London Calling’…)

London Town Trailer.

This looks cool although I think it’s a bit too clean and The Clash look like models wearing fresh clothing… It might be because the story is told from the point of a posh kid…? We’ll see. Rhys Meyers is too pretty to play Joe Strummer but he’s such a good actor I’m sure that won’t matter at all. Looking forward to this one.
